Shoot 'Em Up (2007) - Kinetic, hyper-violent tale of a badass and a baby...but the willfully perverse characters here seem designed to shock - the action is intricate but soulless, I'll take Chow Yun-Fat in a maternity ward any day. Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti, Monica Bellucci too.
Grade: C+
The Rabbit Trap (1959) - Sweet little drama about hardworking Ernest Borgnine (in full nice-guy mode) trying to balance home life and work. Very evocative of the time period, but the financial anxiety of the main characters is something you never see these days.

Grade: B
Renaissance (2006) - Striking animated tale of Daniel Craig investigating..um...something...in the future? The imagery is great to look at for a while, but the confused story has you tuning out less than an hour in.
Grade: C-
Eastern Promises (2007) - Didn't Viggo get nominated for this? (Yes.) Why? David Cronenberg is unrecognizable from behind the camera (the naked fight scene is good but made me think more of Ken Russell than Cronenberg). Boring pulp nonsense with Naomi Watts getting mixed up with deadly Russian gangsters because she needs a translator. Next time, Berlitz?
Grade: C
As for Dave C., this latest project is more like it.
